The SIRENA Platform and Toolset to monitor, compare and select Nature-Based Solutions
01 · SIRENA Platform
SIRENA Platform
An integrated digital platform combining diverse data streams, monitoring and DSS tools, and diverse inventories to support NBS implementation and cross-site comparison.
SIRENA Platform is an integrated geospatial data platform to support monitoring of the required environmental parameters of the pilot sites and act as a repository of project results. It will integrate multiple data sources, including satellite imagery (e.g. Sentinel), hydrological models, in-situ sensor data and citizen science sources, allowing the complete monitoring of the sites.
The platform will also include tools and sensors for monitoring key parameters such as soil health (e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon), water holding capacity, erosion control, and water quality indices. A citizen science app will be available allowing the collection of needed data e.g. reports on locally intense and adverse effects of climate events and facilitating interaction with local stakeholders e.g., enabling feedback for the acceptance of the solutions.
All the data will be stored in dedicated databases, allowing the creation of a complete project platform that also includes the WMLs monitoring framework, the MWR Atlas, the MED Green water policies inventory, and the MWRF. The data storage shall support the FAIR principles, whereas the OGC standards shall be utilized allowing the interoperability of the platform and the integration of external data sources.

02 · SIRENA Toolset
SIRENA Toolset
Two decision support tools: an AI-powered WEFE Nexus scenario modelling tool and a multi-sectoral analysis and participatory decision support widget for NBS prioritisation and selection.
The SIRENA Toolset will comprise the WEFE Nexus AI scenario modelling tool and the Participatory NBS selection widget.
AI-powered WEFE Nexus scenario modelling tool
A first version of the WEFE Nexus AI scenario modelling tool developed by the SureNexus PRIMA project will be improved, retrofitted and optimized to build tailored scenarios for any geographical area (region or watershed), responding to specific challenges such as urban flooding, drought, or land degradation. By analysing environmental, socio-economic, and governance parameters, the tool will generate context-specific NBS recommendations. This process will enhance decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and the scaling of effective NBS across the region.
Participatory NBS selection widget
A human-centric digital interface based on the expansion of the capabilities of the NBS/BES selection SureNexus tool by allowing: i) the creation of a common data repository of all the stakeholder replies, ii) a stocktaking of all the NBS catalogues and further expansion with all the results of the project and iii) a user centric design on the selection of the most appropriate measures for each site. The widget embeds a structured MCA interface: users input weighting preferences and evaluation criteria, explore trade-offs and compare NBS options in real time through interactive charts and geospatial overlays, and store and export ranked outcomes for stakeholder deliberation.
